At the School of Classics we try and give our incoming and prospective students a flavour of what it’s actually like to study Classics at St Andrews. This has been especially hard to do this past year due to the various restrictions the pandemic has brought. But life does not stop, and nor does higher education. So, to help show how both life and learning continues here at St Andrews we started making videos.
Right from the beginning of the lockdown, students and staff worked together, recording videos about studying at St Andrews. We filmed most of the footage on our phones. Like other universities in Spring 2020 we had to make a quick switch to online tuition. Then at the start of the 2020/2021 academic year we pioneered a mix of online and socially distanced face-to-face teaching.
The first series of Lockdown Videos came from the initial lockdown, while we were teaching online only. The second series comes from a period in which we were in “dual delivery”. We call the second series Socially Distanced Videos. Admittedly, this doesn’t have the same ring — but it had to be called something…
In the first series, the videos are mainly subject specific, but one’s about what it’s like to be a postgraduate student here in the School of Classics. The second series kicks off with a video about what it’s like to study Classics at St Andrews now, from students and staff in the thick of dual delivery.
We’re on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, so please feel free to say hi and share away! #seeyouatstandrews

The video features students engaged on the Classics MLitt and PhD programmes, some of whom benefit from various scholarships and bursaries available to our students.
