We are delighted to welcome Dr Thomas Biggs to a permanent position in Latin in the School of Classics. An expert in Latin Literature, Tom comes to us from the University of Georgia after his PhD at Yale.
Tom has a wide range of interests spanning literature, cultural history, and reception. His first monograph, The Poetics of the First Punic War (Michigan 2020), explores the interaction of history, literature and cultural memory in the earliest Roman literature which ‘created’ and memorialized the First Punic War. Future projects include a commentary on Silius Italicus’ Punica, editorial work on the earliest Roman comedic fragments, and a study of the ‘submarine’ in antiquity. Tom takes up this position on the 1st of August.
