Philostratus’ Gymnasticus and beyond

In this lecture, Dr Jason König explores Philostratus’ work Gymnasticus from the early third century AD. The lecture examines how Philostratus represents athletes and trainers in the context of athletic idealisation and knowledge.

The full title of the lecture is ‘Philostratus’ Gymnasticus and beyond: concepts of Olympic history and Olympic continuity in Imperial Greek literature.’ It was a part of the ‘Sport and Competition in Ancient Greece and Rome’-conference at British Museum, June 14th-15th 2012.
